Mobile phone marketing is the latest e-marketing service to hit the World Wide Web. Some very large companies are regularly using sms to broadcast advertising messages to their target customers.
While receiving propaganda e- marketing messages over the phone can sometimes be very annoying for the customer, it does get results, otherwise these companies would not invest so much money and effort in doing it – there has to be a profitable return.
But it is not just large companies that are effectively using this digital marketing strategy. Some very clever specialist online businesses have recently grown up which can directly stream online advertising to smartphones all around the world on behalf of smaller companies and individuals.
So if you have something to sell or want to direct people to your website or blog then there is a huge market out there waiting for the information and you can connect with your potential customers directly.
What is rapidly changing is that some experts believe the personal computer, laptop or desktop PC will soon become largely irrelevant. It is clear that Apple no longer wants to be in the PC business, they want to be in the mobile phone business where they are making most of their money and sales.
Latest data suggests that worldwide there are around 2 billion Internet users but 5 billion mobile phones. The phenomenal growth of the mobile phone is particularly marked in the developing world where relatively smaller numbers of people have laptops and PCs.
In the developing world most people have gone directly to the mobile phone and it is only a matter of time before they upgrade to smartphones with direct access to the World Wide Web. In 2008 the number of mobile phones in Africa reached 300 million, overtaking the combined numbers in the USA and Canada.
In continents like Africa and Asia where physical communication is often difficult and time consuming over a poorly maintained road network, the mobile phone has become life changing and in many cases a basic necessity; it has enabled millions of people to communicate easily, conduct business immediately, transfer money and get instant advice on health problems.
In the developed world currently more than fifty per cent of new mobile connections are for smartphones and the numbers are rising rapidly. Recent research in the United States indicates that a massive 91% of Americans keep their mobile phones within 3 feet of them 24/7. I doubt that many of us have ever been that intimate with our desktop PCs!
So do I think that mobile phones are the future of the online internet marketing business? You bet! Just wait for the next ring tone – it might be sending you information on something that you didn’t know you needed yet!
