Social Media Marketing Takes on Three Minds

The mind is truly a masterpiece of mystery and achievement. It is able to take in vast amounts of signals and turn it into something meaningful for the body to take action. With the ability to discern and compare, every single thought that arises is a suggestion for action. The world of advertising has banked on this idea in being able to deliver considerations for the mind to choose. With the internet, advertising has turned to social media marketing for a more efficient sales and profit potential.

With millions of dollars spent on advertising and promotions, it is evident that even social media marketing goes well in the virtual world. So how does it become entwined with the way the mind works?

During the second half of the century, Paul McLean proposed that the mind works in three separate constructs. The Trium Brain as he proposed works co-dependent with one another in the thought process. Through evolution, the mind has transformed from the primal to a combination of primal, systemic, and logical areas. It becomes effective when the campaign is able to trigger all three areas of human thinking.

The first and most primitive mind is the reptilian or R-complex. This involves gut intuition and immediate action to stimuli. It may be connected with the autonomic response of humans in responding and delivering an initial response to a stimulus, which in this case is the social media marketing scheme implemented on merchandise. Marketing ploys such as “Hurry while supply lasts” or “Urgent! One day only promo” hits this mind area for immediate attention.

The second and higher mind form is the mammalian or Limbic brain. Emotions and memories are stored in this mind and either refutes or supports current stimuli as valid or not. In relation to social media marketing, the limbic system gives that “weight” for later logical thinking by the third area of the mind. Its unique marketing allows open comments and feedback which affects the second area. Allowing comments to form supporting statements gives that weight for the limbic brain to process and arrive at a decision.

The new brain referred to as the neocortex is the third and most evolved part of the human mind. This is where logic and reasoning rests. Promotions in social media marketing may have a hard time getting a grasp on this area since even the most convincing schemes may still be rejected. Though the decision power relies partly from the first and second area, the third area still has the final decision.

In able to increase the chances of landing a favorable decision, social media marketing has employed a way to partly involve the logical mind. Through comments and feedback discussions, the logical area is constantly refreshed so as to keep it in line with the promotion.

Hard selling reaches the first two minds and is fairly easy to get a grasp on. As for the rational mind, it becomes a little bit harder. Thank goodness to social media marketing protocols, all three minds are tapped for better marketing and more efficient advertising.
